Which Lottery Tickets Win the Most?

Real data on which scratch tickets give you the best shot at winning.

"Winning the most" can mean different things

When people ask which lottery tickets win the most, they usually mean one of two things: which tickets give you the best chance of winning anything at all, or which tickets pay out the most money overall. These are actually very different questions, and the answers don't always overlap.

A $1 ticket might let you win something on 1 in 4 tickets, but those wins are almost all just your dollar back. A $30 ticket might only win on 1 in 3 tickets, but the payouts are substantially bigger when you do win. So "winning the most" depends on what you're optimizing for.

Highest win rate: cheap tickets

If you just want to experience the thrill of scratching a winner as often as possible, cheaper tickets ($1-$3) tend to have the highest win frequency. Overall odds of around 1 in 4 or 1 in 5 are common. The catch is that most of those "wins" are break-even prizes where you get your money back or win a free ticket.

There's nothing wrong with this approach if you're playing for entertainment. Just know that you're not really coming out ahead financially on these games. The EV on cheap tickets is often the worst across all price points.

Best overall payout: mid-range tickets

If you care about getting the most money back per dollar spent, mid-range tickets ($5-$10) tend to perform best. They usually have the highest expected value, meaning you lose less money on average per dollar played. The win frequency is slightly lower than cheap tickets, but when you win, the prizes are meaningful.

But here's the thing that matters most: the specific game matters way more than the price point. A great $5 game will crush a mediocre $10 game every time. That's why checking live data beats any rule of thumb.

The real answer: check live data

Which tickets win the most changes literally every day as prizes get claimed. The game that was the best deal last week might be one of the worst this week if a bunch of top prizes got scratched off over the weekend.

Scratchy tracks every active scratch game across 16 states and calculates live odds and expected value. You can see which games in California, Texas, Florida, New York, and North Carolina are actually winning the most right now with real numbers instead of guessing.
